Pool Construction

3/23/09

The crew returned today to continue work on the pool. The job hit a one month delay, but is ready to continue. Hopefully there will not be any more of these along the way. No matter what, those four weeks will get added on to the total project time. So, the expected completion date of May 15th is now at least June 12th.

1/13/09 - Just for fun...

It can be hard to imagine what this pool will look like only by description. Now, you must know that this is all fake, but it may give you an idea of the size of the pool. I took a satellite image (from Google Maps) of our old pool and took it into Photoshop. From there, I used a couple of tricks to make something that looks like our new pool will look. THIS IS FOR FUN ONLY! It will look much better than this. Again, this is just to get an idea of what the pool might look like.

UPDATE 1/9/09!

This morning there was the pre-construction meeting between all parties involved in the building of the new pool, including the contractor that was awarded the bid. Dr. Cross, Mr. Stevens, Coach Clarkson, and Coach Henninger were present as well. Here's everything that I can tell you for now:

Starting the week of 1/12 the contractor will begin preparations at the site for the construction. This includes bringing in a trailer and sectioning off storage areas.

Construction is scheduled to begin on 1/19.

The district timeline says that the pool will be completed on May 15th. The contractor did not show any signs that he feels they cannot meet that deadline.

Pool plans

Yes, we finally got to see them. Once I have an image to post, I will. For now, here's a description:

The pool is 25 yards going the direction that the old pool went 25 yards, and it is 25 meters going the other direction.

In the 25 meter direction it is 7 feet deep for the width of the water polo field (probably 20 meters). Water polo will be played going that direction. Outside of the field of play it will be 4.5 feet deep. (We might also have room to play with floating goals).

In the swim direction, it is 7 feet deep most of the way, with the last 5 or so yards being 4.5 feet deep. According to the plans, the blocks will be mounted on the opposite side from where they used to be.

According to the plans, there will be 10 swimming lanes.

There are other details, but nothing as important as how big and deep the pool will be.

More to come!

In April of 2006, the GGUSD School Board approved the funding needed to build a new pool at Garden Grove High School. From there, plans started to be developed. We expected it to happen quickly, but things kept delaying the project. Finally, in April of 2008, the final plans were approved by the state. The job was to go up for bid on June 4th. The district figured they could save time and money by doing the demolition themselves, and began tearing the old pool apart on May 6th and have been working every day since then.

Here is an animation of the work so far. Click on the image to go to a web gallery with a lot more pictures of the demolition.
