Magnolia came to GGHS for the first time for a game against the Argos. A close Varsity game saw the Argos trailing by a goal early in the fourth quarter. The team rallied to take a four goal lead, then held on for the win.
The JV team also came together for the win. Let's keep the home winning streak alive!
9/16/09 | Water Polo
The Argos played their first home game in the new pool against Westminster. It was a well fought game on both sides, but the Argos came out victorious. Both Varsity and JV won.
There will be many Argo Victories in this pool, but this will always be the first. Thank you to the boys for opening this pool right.
9/14/09 | Argo Aquatics
It was a cool Tuesday morning in May of 2008 that we got into the pool at GGHS one last time. Right after we got out, demolition began. Count that as day 1. On day 498, we got back in. That makes 496 days of no pool. 496 days of being visitors everywhere we went. 496 days of bringing dedication to a new level by traveling for everything we did.
All that is past and now we are finally back home. Now the challenge comes of making the best of this gift that we've been given. With the dedication of the past 498 days and a great new place to workout, we can build the greatest program this league has ever seen.

Isaac Martinez had a strong showing in CIF, making it to the Finals in both of his events. He finished 14th in the 100 Breaststroke and got a personal best time of 1:04.73. He took 6th place overall in the 200 Individual Medley, and also came within one second of the 26 year-old record with his time of 2:05.84 at prelims.
It was a very successful meet for the girls as well. Vivianne Mai took 12th overall in the 200 Individual Medley. The Medley Relay team of Carly Beer, Vivianne Mai, Melisa Martinez, and Kaitlyn Frain took 16th overall, and the 200 Free Relay team of Bay Nguyen, Carly Beer, Melisa Martinez, and Vivianne Mai took 15th overall.
As a team, the girls took 33rd place, the boys took 35th.
Let's also not forget Dax Terrack and Melisa Martinez who made it to CIF Prelims in individual events, as well as Johnny Umanzor and Brennan Wighton for making a relay. They didn't make it to Finals, but qualifying for CIF Prelims is a huge accomplishment in itself; one which most swimmers will never experience.
CIF Prelim Results | CIF Finals Results
5/12/09 | Swimming
New school records were set at League Finals and CIF Prelims.
In the 200 IM, Vivianne Mai broke the record at both events. Her CIF Prelim time of 2:24.55 is the new record.
In the 100 Breast, Vivianne Mai has broken her own record a few times since setting it. It now stands at 1:14.44 which was set at League Finals where she took 1st place. The original record that Vivianne broke in the breast was 1:17.00. She has taken more than 2.5 seconds off of that!
The girls 200 Medley Relay team of Carly Beer, Vivianne Mai, Melisa Martinez, and Bay Nguyen at CIF Prelims broke that school record, bringing its time to 2:05.04.
Strong Performances at League Finals
5/8/09 | Swimming
The Argos had strong performances in both the boys and girls League Finals. The girls team took second place in the meet to secure second overall in league. The boys took a strong third place at the meet and also finished third in league. Individually it was one of the most dominant league finals the Argos have had.
The boys shocked everybody by taking first place in 4 of 8 individual events. Conor Self won the 100 Freestyle, Dax Terrack won the 100 Backstroke, and Isaac Martinez won the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 Breaststroke.
The girls were also incredibly successful in the individual events, winning 5 individual events and 1 relay. Carly Beer won the 100 Backstroke, Melisa Martinez won the 200 and 500 Freestyle, and Vivianne Mai won the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 Breaststroke, which was perhaps the most anticipated event of the meet. The 200 Freestyle relay team of Bay Nguyen, Carly Beer, Melisa Martinez, and Vivianne Mai took first place as well.
Vivianne Mai and Melisa Martinez were named Swimmers of the Meet for the girls. Isaac Martinez and Alex Cisneros from Rancho were named Swimmers of the Meet on the boys side.
Fastest GGHS Breaststroker Ever
4/16/09 | Swimming
Vivianne Mai showed a lot of promise when she started her swimming career at GGHS. From the very first meet she was swimming times that would challenge the best in Lady Argo history. In the league meet against Los Amigos, she made it official that she was the fastest female breastroker ever at Grove by breaking the 30 year old record.
Previously, Kathy O'Reilly held the record of 1:17.00 which she set in 1979. The new record set by Vivianne is 1:16.93.
A freshman breaking a record in the middle of the season indicates that she will do it again. There is, however, certainly nothing more special than breaking your very first record. Congratulations Vivianne!
4/2/09 | Swimming
The boys and girls swim teams captured solid league wins against La Quinta. The girls led the meet from start to finish. On the boys side, it was the second half of the meet that brought the victory. The team trailed going into the 500 Free, but strong performances there, the 200 relay, and the backstroke solidified the victory.
3/26/09 | Swimming
The Argonaut swim teams had their first league meet of the year and came out with wins in all 4 levels against Bolsa Grande.
2/10/09 | Girls Water Polo
The Lady Argos headed into their game against Rancho Alamitos as the only undefeated team which guaranteed them at least a share of the league title. Even with that secure, the team stepped-up to erase any doubts that we were the number one team this year.
Carly Beer led the team with 8 goals on the way to a 21-5 victory. Tymeri Wright got things going with a rebound goal in the first quarter. Her steals and assists helped lead the counterattack which set the pace early. Zoe Agapinan had 8 saves, including 2 in a row on a one-on-one counterattack.
This marks the Lady Argos' seventh consecutive league title.

2/10/09 | Girls Water Polo
The JV and Frosh/Soph teams joined together for their final league game of the year. Garden Grove and Rancho Alamitos were the only teams in the league who were unbeaten, so the winner would take the Championship.
The Lady Argos put together an impressive game and came away with the 12-1 win and the league title. This team stepped-up and carried on a winning tradition, making this the eighth consecutive title for the JV team (in 8 years of having girls water polo at GGHS.)

The Alumni game is a nice tradition at any school. We are fortunate that we get to assemble so many champions in one pool for a classic showdown. All together, the players represented seven League Championsips. Six of them were the girls titles from 2003-2008, and one player was from the boys (co-ed) League Championship team from 1998.
All players put together a great game, but in the end even a strong team in the best shape of the season couldn't overcome so many years of experience. The Alumni won 15-10.
From left to right (kind of) - Leanne Byram, Zoe Agapinan, Tymeri Wright, Kaitlin Frain, Emily Easley, Elizabeth Keenan, Liz Ruiz, Carly Beer, Lindsey Skelton, Jessica Valdez, Becky Wilson, Cassie Zaim, Judy Parrish, Jaclyn Calderon, Samantha Lane, CJ Longeuay, Jeanette De Meneces, Liz Zuliani, Laura De Meneces, Cory Horwitz.
1/20/09 | Girls Water Polo
The Lady Argos Varsity water polo team posted a very tight win in a very exciting game against Los Amigos. The Lobos scored first after winning the opening sprint, but the Argos also scored on their first posession to tie the game at one. Grove led 5-3 with seconds remaining in the first, but Los scored on a lob shot from the half to make it 5-4. The second quarter was lower scoring, but saw the lead expand to 7-5. Los Amigos dominated the third quarter and tied the game at 7. Tied in the fourth, it was sophomore Kaitlyn Frain who stepped-up and scored two goals to make the final score 9-8.
The team has only one remaining league game on February 10th against Rancho Alamitos at 7:00.
1/20/09 | Girls Water Polo
The girls JV water polo team continues to step up and carry on tradition. In an effort to win their eighth consecutive league title, the team has improved to 3-0 with a win over Los Amigos and are left with only one game remaining.
The 20-3 win came behind some impressive goaltending by Nichole Herrera, who had 6 saves. Goals were scored by 10 players, the most coming from Becca Ruvalcaba who had 4.

Brianna Vi - 3
Meagan Flacy - 2

1/10/09 | Girls Water Polo
This was a busy week for the Lady Argos Varsity water polo team. Seven games in Six days are tough, but it proved to be the team's best week yet. The team opened the week up with a 16-4 win over Lakewood, and followed that with a 12-7 win over Bolsa Grande. Thursday they entered the Western Varsity Tournament. The first game was a 5-13 loss to Tustin. That night came a very fun and competitive game with Kennedy, which resulted in a 9-11 loss. Friday the team faced a tough El Dorado JV team and came out with a 13-2 win. Saturday brought a rematch with Orange, this time with a 9-6 win. The final game was with Arcadia and that brought an 11-8 win.
All in all it was a busy week, but truly one of our best yet. Winning five out of seven games in one week is a great indicator of where this team is going.
1/6/09 | Girls Water Polo
Both the Varsity and JV teams opened up league play with tough wins over Bolsa Grande. JV won 15-8 in their first game at Santiago. Bree Mertes led the scoring with 7 goals. Other scorers were Brianna Vi with 4, Miranda Medrano with 2, and Becca Ruvalcaba. Goalie Nichole Herrera had 9 saves.
The Varsity game, which has been anticipated since last year when the Lady Argos won by a single point, did not let anybody down. The game opened up with Garden Grove opening a 4-1 lead, which was erased in the final 2 minutes to leave the game tied 5-5 at halftime. The Lady Argos got their rhythm back in the second half, leading 9-6 after the third and winning 12-7 at the end. Carly Beer led the scoring with 8 goals. Other goals were added by Tymeri Wright, Kaitlyn Frain, Emily Easley, and Judy Parrish.
1/5/09 | Girls Water Polo
The Lady Argos came out of the winter break right into a game at Lakewood. Strong wins were posted in the Varsity and Frosh/Soph games. While good overall team play was a big part of the wins, two players had particularly good games.
Carly Beer set a new school record for goals in a single game with 11. The 10 goal mark was set by Jeanette De Meneces in 2004 and had been matched by Carly earlier this season.
In the Frosh/Soph game it was Brianna Vi who did most of the scoring with 13 goals. Non-Varsity marks aren't considered records, but 13 goals is the most that any player at Garden Grove has ever scored in a game.
12/20/08 | Girls Water Polo
Coach Lane thinks very highly of her young Frosh/Soph team and believes that they are going to turn into a powerhouse in the years to come. We all believe that many wins will come their way, but that first one can be hard to get. Despite getting close, that first one eluded them until Saturday.
Facing a rematch with La Habra, the Lady Argos were pumped and ready to give it everything they had in their final game of 2008. A great match went on with each team leading at some point, but never by more than a single point. In true dramatic style, the Lady Argos went ahead 6-5 with under a minute remaining on a counter goal by Brianna Vi (assist by Chrissy McCullogh). Meagan Flacy came up with a steal at the end to secure the ball and the win.

The Lady Argos completed their seven game opening week with two wins on Saturday in the Santa Ana Valley Tournament. Coach Clarkson kindly covered for an out-of-town Coach Henninger, and did a particularly fine job making adjustments in the second game to secure the win.
The first game saw the ladies earn a 9-4 win over Westminster. The second game provided tons of excitement with the team coming from behind to tie the game at 12 goals and send it into sudden-death overtime. Carly Beer hit the game-winning goal to give the Lady Argos the 13-12 win.
11/25/08 | Girls Water Polo
It's finally time to get things finalized for the Lady Argos this season, and the biggest announcement is who will represent the 6-time Defending Varsity Championship team from Garden Grove. So, with no further delay, here is the roster:
Zoe Agapinan
Carly Beer
Emily Easley
Kaitlyn Frain
Elizabeth Keenan
Brenda Nguyen
Judy Parrish
Stephanie Rea
Elizabeth Ruiz
Tymeri Wright
10/24/08 | Boys Water Polo
The Argos scored their first sweep of the season with Varsity and JV wins over Santa Ana.
The Varsity game was tight from start to finish, but the Argos led the whole way and ended with a 12-10 win. Josh Keenan led the way with 5 goals, and Conor Self added 3. Tyler McKenzie also had 11 saves.
The JV team also led from start to finish, finishing with a 12-4 win. Jason Gwynn and Nick Tovar led the Argos with 3 goals each. Coach Hoxie was unable to be at the game due to a work conflict, but was quite happy to get the "Argo Victory" voicemail afterwards.
Teamwork Leads to First JV Win
10/17/08 | Boys Water Polo
The Boys JV team put together a strong effort against Gahr in the Canyon Tournament to get their first win of the season. Inexperience has held this team back in many games, though some talent has definitely made for good plays. Today, however, they were finally able to put everything together to get the win. Qute simply, it is easy to believe that now that this team has tasted victory, they will crave it in every game and do what it takes to make it happen.
10/14/08 | Boys Water Polo
The Boys Varsity Team picked-up their first league win of the season with a 16-7 victory over La Quinta. A steady game was put together by the whole team, leading to a lead that built throughout the entire game.
Scoring was led by Isaac Martinez who had 5 goals. Adam Toth had a strong game, especially in the third quarter when he scored all 4 of his goals. Josh Keenan, Conor Self, and Dax Terrack rounded out the scoring. Tyler McKenzie played a major role by protecting the goal, having 10 saves and allowing only 7 goals.
A team game ball was awarded for this game, as it took every player to put together the win.
10/13/08 | Boys Water Polo
Facing some tough draws in the Vallekamp Tournament, the Argos put together a couple of strong games. Tonight's 13-18 loss to Warren was just one of those. The Argos put together an energy for the game that has only been seen a few times all season. Truly, playing like this makes the team one to be feared by all.
In particular, Adam Toth and Isaac Martinez had stellar performances. Adam Toth earned the game ball for his 5 goals from 2 meters, by far his best 2 meter performance of the year. Isaac Martinez also had 5 goals.
10/5/08 | Boys Water Polo
The start of league is always an exciting time for our water polo teams. Many teams have had a tough pre-season, but the Argos have always brought their best game when it came to league. The improvement that our Varsity and JV teams have had so far makes us believe that this season will be no different.
League play begins with Bolsa Grande on Tuesday. JV will play at 3:00 at Santiago, while Varsity plays at 6:30 at Savanna. This is looking like it will be a good game, with Bolsa Grande playing two of the same opponents this week as we did, and posting similar scores. The Matadors lost to Katella 4-21 (we lost 5-20) and lost to Westminster 13-14 (we lost 14-16). Score comparisons only say so much, but they do indicate that this will be an exciting league opener.
9/30/08 | Boys Water Polo
Carrying momentum from a strong performance on Monday, the Argos took over the game against Orange early and never looked back. Josh Keenan and Dax Terrack led the scoring with 3 goals each. Conor Self, Isaac Martinez, and Adam Toth rounded out the scoring in the 11-3 win. Goalie Tyler McKenzie received the game ball for a strong performance in goal, blocking 70% of the shots and allowing only 3 goals.
9/29/08 | Boys Water Polo
Once in a while you take a close loss that you can still be proud of. The game against Westminster was just that. The game started off rough, with the Argos falling behind 1-8 at the end of the first quarter. From there, though, it was a much different story. Through the other 3 quarters, the Argos ouscored the Lions 13-8, including tying it at 14 in the fourth quarter. The team didn't quite have what it took to close out the game and take the win, and that is the only thing to be disappointed with here. The strong performance is a sign that this team is stepping up to their potential.
Devin Serber received the game ball for his strong overall performance, including a steal, counter, and goal that he pulled in the fourth quarter to tie the game.
9/22/08 | Boys Water Polo
Opening day in the Katella Tournament brought the boys Varsity team a win that will be remembered all season. In the first half of the game the Argos, led in scoring by Josh Keenan, Adam Toth, and Isaac Martinez, built an 8-2 lead. That lead was extended to 10-4 before Orange went on a 7-1 run in the 4th quarter. Regulation ended with the game tied at 11.
In overtime that Argos found their rhythm again, especially from Tyler McKenzie in the goal. Both teams went scoreless in the first 2 sudden-death overtime periods, before Josh Keenan scored the winning goal on a drive to end the game and give the Argos their first win of the season.
9/9/08 | Boys Water Polo
The 2008 season is here, and it's time to see who will represent the proud tradition of Argonaut water polo.
Senior returners Josh Keenan and Adam Toth, along with Junior returners Conor Self and Devin Serber, are joined by 4 first-time Varsity players. Here is the roster:
Top Row: Josh Keenan, Senior; Adam Toth, Senior; (Coach); Devin Serber, Junior; Tyler McKenzie, Junior
Bottom Row: Conor Self, Junior; Scott Warner, Junior; Isaac Martinez, Sophomore; Dax Terrack, Junior
6/30/08 | Girls Water Polo
Congratulations to Cassie Zaim, who once again earned honors as one of the top players in California and Hawaii. An organization called Kai Sports puts together a list each year to honor the best players in the two states, which account for more than half of the players in the country. The list is the CA/HI All-American team. Cassie earned an Honorable Mention this year, which puts her in the top 4% of all players in CA/HI. This is the second year in a row that she has earned this honor.
I would also like to mention that earning this honor this year means even more than last. This award isn't like other honors, where coaches sit around and talk about their players and vote. This is done by coaches from all over the place casting votes based on stats, as well as what they've seen and heard. This year, due to less team success, Cassie did not get some of the recognition that she has gotten in the past. She did not make the All-So Cal list, which is the main source of info for the Kai Sports list. The fact that she made the CA/HI All-American list is because coaches went out of their way to put her there. That says a lot.
You can look at the full lists here.

Today was graduation, and once again we lose a bunch of people who have become part of the Argo family. It is always a bit painful for me as a coach to see people go. Not only have they done so much for the program over the years, but these are people that I've seen every day for four years, and suddenly that ends. It also brings a lot of excitement, as I know the kinds of things they are going to experience in the years to come. In many ways, life begins after graduation. Hopefully, though, you can look back on all the experiences (family, friends, school, sports) that have made you who you are.
I am very excited to see what the Class of 2008 will do for the world. Please know that to me, you are Argos for Life, and you are always welcome at Garden Grove High School.
Argo Aquatics Web Site Unveiled
5.27.2008 | Argo Aquatics
Welcome to the new Argo Aquatics web site! I have been secretly working on this for some time now, and am proud to finally unveil it. The Yahoo! Group has been a great way to communicate for some time now, but I have found it to be limiting in some ways. This will be the new way to find all the information you need... and then some!
I hate to admit, though, that I am breaking a major rule of web design and publishing an incomplete site. The reason is that I need to have it up for when the intermediate schools are visited (today) so that I can have an easy place to tell the newcomers where to go for more info. I didn't want to let them all see it and not you, so I am telling everybody. I will be working hard to get it all finished as soon as possible.

Today the demolition of the pool at GGHS began. The pool we're all used to was built in 1956 and has served our teams very well over the years. The new one will be bigger and will have a lot more deep area. Construction time is pretty unknown at this point. Once the contractor is hired in July, we should be able to get a better idea of when it will be finished. At least we know we're finally getting a pool that we can have real practices in, as well as play games in!
I will keep this site updated as work comes along. Check "The Pool" in the "About" menu.
